Battambang City is located in Battambang Province in the north-wester region of Cambodia. Among Cambodias secondary cities Battambang, with a population of about 140.000 inhabitants, is the largest. The city’s name derivates from the commonly known legend of “Bat Dambong” - the story of the “lost stick”. During the french protectorate the former dispensed settlement was transformed into a busy marketplace, urban agglomeration and administration stronghold. Later on, during the Sangkum Reastry Niyum, King Sihanouk had the vision to develop the city into a education and industry location. Today it is a major regional center to the whole north-west of Cambodia.
Spared by mass tourism and economical based on agriculture Battambangs todays development lags behind of other towns like Siem Reap or Sihanoukville. Hence the economic boom of the last years has not affected the cityscape as much as seen somewhere else. Despite certain changes and new constructions, especially the inner city kept much of its colonial appearance and old-world charm. |
