The city centre between Road No. 1 and Road No. 3 is most likely the largest coherent ensemble of heritage buildings in Cambodia. With around 800 buildings from three different periods, being witness of the urban history of Battambang, this area must be preserved for present and future generations likewise. Hundreds of shophouses in various styles and the Provincial Museum as well as the compunds of the two wats and the famous landmark Phsar Nath Market are to be found there. However, not only these buildings form the urban heritage of Battambang. The urban layout itself with its characteristic grid pattern network of streets and backlanes, facilitating the shophouses, is part of the coherent heritage ensemble.According to its historic importance, the inner city of Battambang has been given the status of an “Heritage Protection Area”. |
